When Iwan and Manuela Wirth first encountered Durslade Farm on the outskirts of Bruton, a small town located in Somerset, England, they saw more than verdant grounds and a derelict farmstead: they saw a refuge and a vision of home. In time, this vision expanded, materializing in the 2014 opening of an art center for artists, friends, locals and visitors from near and far—a paradoxical place full of energy, people and ideas.
‘We knew that in Somerset we had found a very special place where we could bring all of our interests together: art, architecture, landscape, conservation, gardening, food, education, community... and family.’

‘It felt like an opportunity to think about how one would escape and how one would be in a distant place, and how my work would function outside of the comfort zone that I had become accustomed to in my own studio.’

‘Gardening, for me, is essential. It’s my life. I think and breathe through it. And you always hope that other people can find that as well.’
