Paul McCarthy and Randy Kennedy, Hauser & Wirth’s Director of Special Projects and editor of Ursula magazine, discuss everything from the work of Philip Guston and his depictions of the apocalypse, to McCarthy’s 2019 Ursula cover feature on the power of seditious art. The conversation was part of ‘Celebrating Basel Basel’, Hauser & Wirth’s online project for the 50th anniversary of Art Basel.
Paul McCarthy is widely considered to be one of the most influential and groundbreaking contemporary American artists and is known for visceral, often hauntingly humorous work in a variety of mediums—from performance, photography, film and video, to sculpture, drawing and painting. Randy Kennedy has been the gallery’s Director of Special Projects and editor of Ursula magazine since 2018. He was a reporter at The New York Times for 23 years, more than half of those writing about the art world.
