Art and Design Students Respond to Takesada Matsutani in Paris

20 September 2024

In collaboration with students from École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art

On the occasion of Takesada Matustani’s exhibition ‘Matsutani’ at Hauser & Wirth Paris, we collaborated with students from the local arts and design school École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art to create a series of digital projects inspired by the works on view.

The project ran from March – July 2024 and marked the inaugural collaboration between Hauser & Wirth Paris and a higher education institution since the location opened in October 2023. The project involved ten Digital Master’s Degree students who came together to discuss Matsutani's exhibition and produce individual digital responses to the works on view.

Using 3D modeling and AI-based image generators, the students created a bespoke website to virtually showcase their 3D shapes and forms. The cohort also produced a teaser film celebrating their creations. The content reflects their impressions of abstraction and artistic philosophy displayed in the works of Matsutani.

About Takesada Matsutani
The Ōsaka-born artist has lived and worked in Paris for the past 60 years, developed a unique visual language of form and material over five decades, and at the age of 87 maintains an energetic daily studio practice. This exhibition at our Paris gallery, organized with Olivier Renaud-Clement, features a selection of new works in direct response to the space, a highlight of which includes a major site-specific window installation, alongside rare historic pieces by the artist from his time in the Gutai group.
