Supporting arts organizations Bold Tendencies, Spike Island and The New Art School Modality through three-year professional development initiatives
As part of our Learning program, Hauser & Wirth is thrilled be to partnering with arts organizations Bold Tendencies (London, UK), Spike Island (Bristol, UK) and The New Art School Modality (New York NY). Each three-year partnership is focused on increasing access, support and expertise for professional development within the arts, as well as engaging broader communities with art and artists. These initiatives allow us to work in tandem with our partner organizations over a sustained period, adapting and developing these programs together in order to create long-term meaningful change and a positive impact.
Since 2014, the gallery has been committed to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences with a focus on first-hand experience. Our ongoing global projects are centered on three core pillars: to engage with communities; enrich academic programs; and foster better access to art careers through a series of meaningful partnerships.
Bold Tendencies
October 2024 – October 2026
Over the next two years, the gallery is partnering with Bold Tendencies, a not-for-profit arts organization based in Peckham, London, UK. Hauser & Wirth London will fund and support the ‘Paid Professional Development Days’ to individuals in entry level roles within Bold Tendencies Learning and Engagement teams.
Established in the rooftop spaces of Peckham’s multi-storey car park, Bold Tendencies has transformed a disused building in the heart of South London into an iconic, much-loved place of culture and assembly. Bold Tendencies delivers an ambitious annual artistic program of visual arts, creative learning and live events. Each annual program brings to life a major theme: a series of responses from a new generation of voices alongside acclaimed international artists in visual art, music, dance, opera, poetry and readings. This allows for multiple entry points for the public, artists and audiences, as well as placing the work in conversation with wider cultural happenings and urgent conversations. Their year-round Creative Learning Program of free and accessible initiatives foster space for local groups and individuals to imagine, create and exercise the right to joy.
‘Partnering with Hauser & Wirth strengthens our commitment to nurturing a sustainable talent pipeline at Bold Tendencies. Through this collaboration, we have built a professional development program where entry-level staff gain paid, hands-on experience, access to invaluable industry insights, and the opportunity to build meaningful networks—paving the way for new voices and fresh perspectives to shape the future of the creative industry.’—Misty Ingham, Senior Curator & Producer: Creative Learning, Bold Tendencies
Spike Island
April 2025 – March 2028
The gallery will support contemporary arts center Spike Island’s annual ‘Engagement Fellowship for South West-Based Curators,’ designed to assist curators in their career development and enhance engagement with contemporary art across the South West of England. This partnership will connect Hauser & Wirth Somerset and Spike Island’s Learning and Engagement programs for the next three years.
Spike Island produces and presents contemporary art and culture in Bristol, UK. Its diverse artistic program includes free major exhibitions, events and engagement activities taking place on-site and online. Championing outstanding work by emerging and underrepresented local, national and international artists, the program enhances access to contemporary art for audiences from all backgrounds. Alongside its public offer, they support artists through new commissions, over 70 subsidised studios, and sector-leading artist development opportunities that widen access to its program and facilities.

The New Art School Modality
October 2024 – April 2026
The gallery has established a partnership with The New Art School Modality, an innovative and alternative art school model that offers free participation to students via hybrid, online and in-person modules worldwide. Hauser & Wirth, 18th Street will host three courses facilitated by The New Art School Modality between fall 2024 – spring 2026. Participating faculty include: editor Jake Brodsky; curator Valerie Cassel-Oliver; academic, writer and co-founder of The Art School Modality Romi Crawford; academic and writer Stefano Harney; academic and art historian Hannah Higgins; artist Glenn Ligon; writer and critic Siddhartha Mitter; curator and researcher René Morales; academic and poet Fred Moten; art historian and writer Alexander Nemerov; curator and writer Legacy Russell; art historian and curator Lowery Stokes Sims; art historian, curator and writer Jenni Sorkin; and film historian, archivist and author Jacqueline Stewart. The first course, ‘Arts Writing/Writing About Art,’ runs from 11 October – 13 December 2024.
The New Art School Modality explores and brings to life new forms of teaching, learning, art production and impact. The school is grounded in an ethos of collaboration, experimentation and improvisation. It offers a revised version of the art school model, methods and procedures, one that has fewer institutional protocols. There is intentionally less hand-holding and the apparatus is reduced. All of this as a nod to prior historical moments when making art and being an artist were less reliant on costly infrastructures. The New Art School Modality courses are hybrid, online and in-person. Unlike other art schools, it is not place based or centric. The New Art School Modality is supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
‘The New Art School Modality emphasizes collaboration in various ways, including this sort of critical cooperation with partners such as Hauser & Wirth, in order to ground arts pedagogy in a wider range of histories and innovate in the art school sector.’—Romi Crawford, Founder, The New Art School Modality
