On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Winfred Rembert. All of Me’ please join us for a conversation between artists Kate Capshaw, Russell Craig, and Amy Sherald in response to Winfred Rembert’s work and practice, moderated by Curatorial Senior Director, Kate Fowle, at Hauser & Wirth New York 69th street.
Rembert’s legacy, as seen in this exhibition, is a searing and intimate account of American life from the 1960s until present day, told through more than 40 works made in his signature medium of carved, tooled, and painted leather. His works recount personal experiences from growing up in the Jim Crow South, to the Civil Rights Movement, incarceration, and the deep bonds of his community. Rembert’s life and practice is the inspiration for a conversation between three leading artists whose work resonates with Rembert’s.
Kate Capshaw’s portraits venture to shift the viewer’s two-dimensional gaze to a more intimate experience—witnessing a life worthy of value. Her first solo exhibition ‘Unaccompanied’ is currently on view at The Bo Bartlett Center at Columbus State University through May 12, 2023. Russell Craig is a self-taught artist, who is formerly incarcerated and the co-founder of the Right of Return Fellowship for formerly incarcerated creatives. His work centers portraiture on leather to provide a narrative on our current social (in)justice system. Amy Sherald engages with the history of portraiture to manifest a complex debate about accepted notions of race and representation and to situate Black life centrally in American art.
Artists Respond is a recurring public program at Hauser & Wirth connecting creative practitioners in response to the gallery's exhibitions and artists to highlight the defining issues of our time.
This event is free, however, due to limited space, reservations are required.
