An Edition in Support of Art into Acres

Marking five years of collaboration between our artists and the non-profit organization Art into Acres, the gallery has partnered with British artist Catherine Goodman on a special fundraising initiative coinciding with Earth Day 2025. Continuing the deep-rooted tradition linking printmaking and environmental activism, Goodman is introducing a series of 18 unique hand-painted lithographs entitled ‘Stay Awake’. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Art into Acres’ land conservation initiatives.

The image is about being attentive, staying awake to the climate crisis… it’s about being vigilant and attentive.’

—Catherine Goodman

Conceived as part of Catherine Goodman’s ongoing practice of drawing from film, an integral part of her creative life for over 15 years, ‘Stay Awake’ is derived from a still from the Ingmar Bergman film ‘Persona’ (1966). The image depicts the lead character, Elizabet Vogel, played by Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, staring directly into the camera, meeting the viewer head on with an expression of tenacious determination. Goodman stated that the image of Ullmann, unflinching in her gaze, ‘is about being attentive and vigilant, staying awake to the climate crisis.’

The monochromatic portrait is set against washes of vibrant pigment, which echo the dynamic watercolors she often paints in nature. The relationship between portrait and landscape has long concerned Catherine Goodman, whose work explores the psychic connections between people, place and memory.

For the past five years, Hauser & Wirth has collaborated with our artists as part of an ongoing initiative to raise funds for Art into Acres through the sale of prints. This series has featured Jenny Holzer (2020), Rashid Johnson (2021), Gary Simmons (2022), Angel Otero (2023) and Mika Rottenberg (2024), resulting in the preservation of an area of cloud forest in Northern Highlands of Guatemala, part of the last large remaining cloud forest in Central America.

For more than four decades, Catherine Goodman CBE has developed a unique visual language that communicates a powerful visionary response to her lived experience and memory. Goodman’s intensely expressive painting process uses strongly pigmented oil paint, brushwork, oil sticks, drips and washes to create atmospheric and immersive paintings which explore both figuration and abstraction.

Art Into Acres

Hauser & Wirth is proud to support Art into Acres, an initiative for artists, gallerists and collectors with a mission to support large-scale land conservation. The gallery’s contribution has conserved over 5,000 acres of cloud forest in Central America.

Art into Acres extends the relationship between art and conservation, from human-made objects to cloud forests and ecosystems,’ says Argentina-born artist Mika Rottenberg, who has worked with Art into Acres in conserving tropical forest to offset the production of her exhibition at MCA Chicago.
