The Education Lab is part of Hauser & Wirth’s commitment to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences. Located at our galleries in Menorca, Somerset and Downtown Los Angeles, as well as Chillida Leku museum, each Education Lab is a collaboration with a local community group, school or university. The interactive spaces take their starting point from one of our international artists, facilitating a platform for discovery, discussion and additional resources.
Avery Singer’s exhibition ‘Free Fall’ offers an exciting opportunity for Hauser & Wirth London to host its first pop-up Education Lab instigating a dialogue between the contents and themes of Singer’s exhibition and a diverse visiting audience. Using the exhibition as a springboard, the Education Lab encourages participants to consider the interconnection of memory, emotion and color in the act of creation through their own writings and drawings.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset returns with a new Education Lab: ‘Turning the Inside Outside: Sustainable Actions in the Art World’. Inspired by artists Mika Rottenberg and Pipilotti Rist, the Education Lab provides a dynamic platform for collaboration across the gallery’s green teams globally. Through the Education Lab, our internal teams have a forum to share knowledge and display new ideas in relation to creative use and reuse of materials within our gallery ecosystem. Visitors are invited to take part in the activation of the space itself, engage with themes of environmental sustainability and suggest future change in the area, working in partnership with Bruton Town Council.

Addressing Christina Quarles’ approach to the body and language, the Education Lab provides a dedicated learning space at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, created in collaboration with 19 students from CREAE Espacio Creativo. The students have created an installation of large canvases depicting body parts responding to a selection of texts from the artist’s drawings and her use of stencil techniques. At an interactive station consisting of distorting mirrors, a felt board and colorful fabric cut-outs, the audience is invited to explore representations of their body.

At Chillida Leku, Phyllida Barlow’s exhibition provides an opportunity for the museum to develop its inaugural Education Lab, in partnership with the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). Inspired by Barlow’s work, six sculpture students from the Faculty of Fine Arts have created a structure which visitors are invited to transform through the addition of fabric, creating a dialogue between materials and engaging with ideas of recollection and memory.
