Supporting the vital work of innovative early childhood education for refugee and displaced children in Los Angeles and Tijuana
Hauser & Wirth has been a key supporter of Los Angeles-based, international non-profit, PILAglobal, over the past two years since the organization was chosen as the charitable partner for two of the gallery’s global Learning initiatives: Education Lab Menorca 2021 and Education Lab Los Angeles 2022. Hauser & Wirth has now pledged to grow its partnership with PILAglobal through a new commitment that will raise $150,000 for the organization through 2025.
PILAglobal’s innovative approach to education involves partnering with local organizations to establish ‘Nests,’ learning spaces that offer culturally responsive early childhood education and holistic family services in refugee camps, migrant shelters and communities experiencing poverty. Hauser & Wirth’s donation will assist with the creation of new classroom spaces, arts and program development, and supplying materials. Additionally, for the next three years, the gallery will help facilitate a series of volunteer trips for alumni of Education Lab Los Angeles 2022. During these trips, participants will spend a week working as international ‘nesters’ at Tijuana Canyon Nest, supporting the PILAglobal staff who will be providing quality programing for the children.
Through the support of Hauser & Wirth and other local partners, PILAglobal will be working with Refugee Children Center (RCC)—a non-profit space dedicated to empowering refugee children and families from Mexico and Central America—to officially launch a learning nest in Los Angeles in Fall 2023. Nest LA will provide an intentional, dedicated space for RCC children to learn, play and heal, as well as an opportunity for caregivers to connect with their children and hone parenting strategies through facilitated classes within the larger, supportive community of Refugee Children Center.
