West Hollywood Gallery Receives LEED® Platinum Certification

20 August 2024

LEED certification recognizes environmental performance and sustainable design

Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood has earned LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, reinforcing Hauser & Wirth’s commitment to environmental sustainability. LEED Platinum certification represents the highest LEED achievement awarded to projects that earn more than 80% of the available points, which is reserved for buildings that demonstrate leadership in sustainability. We are proud to have a green building seal of approval. Our West Hollywood gallery has built-in energy efficiencies which save on operational costs and carbon, and promote well-being.

Located in the heart of West Hollywood, the gallery occupies the former site of a vintage automobile sales showroom where a white stucco façade and red tile roofing typify the distinctive 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival style of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The location has been transformed into a 6,000 square foot exhibition space by Selldorf Architects led by Annabelle Selldorf. Our LEED certification was supported by ERĀS, a local architecture firm based in Southern California who specializes in adaptive reuse of buildings.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the system provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is earned through credits that address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and indoor environmental quality.

Our West Hollywood gallery is the only commercial gallery on the West Coast of the United States to have achieved LEED certification. The project incorporates environmentally conscious strategies comprising 100% renewable building energy consumption, 86% construction waste diverted from landfill, 74% of regularly occupied spaces are naturally daylit, 48% water use reduction, 45% energy use reduction and increased indoor ventilation with CO2 monitoring.

In September, as part of our wider sustainability outlook and dedication to information sharing, we will participate in the Climate Impact Program to coincide with the Getty’s citywide Pacific Standard Time (PST) ART initiative. This approach ties in at a local level in LA to encourage galleries and institutions to minimize their environmental impacts by providing tools to achieve climate fluency. One of the measures that we are embedding as part of our environmental sustainability journey is our ongoing local KiCulture sustainability program. An example of this program is a sustained commitment to widen climate control ranges in our LA galleries to preserve energy, training our teams on effective ways to put this in practice is at the root of our strategy.
