A place for discovery and interaction, coinciding with the exhibition ‘GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG’
This summer, Hauser & Wirth Somerset celebrates the opening of our Education Lab, a global partnership between our learning and green teams, open from Saturday 3 June 2023 until Monday 1 January 2024.
Inspired by Mika Rottenberg and Pipilotti Rist, the Education Lab is a dynamic platform for collaboration across Hauser & Wirth’s green teams globally. Through the Education Lab, our London and Somerset teams have been given a physical forum to share knowledge and display new ideas, in relation to creative use and reuse of materials within our gallery ecosystem. In tandem with the Education Lab, our teams will complete Carbon Literacy training to develop their understanding about the science of climate change and how to deliver vital messages about the most important story of our time. Visitors are invited to take part in the activation of the space itself, engage with themes of environmental sustainability, and be inspired to collaborate and create impact in this area. The Education Lab will host a rolling program of learning events throughout the duration of the exhibition.
In partnership with Bruton Town Council, we will encourage young people to reflect on an environmental issue affecting their local community and write a letter outlining the change they would like to see. Members of the town council’s ‘Climate and Ecological Emergency Working Group’ will read the letters and recommend actions required to the wider council, addressing the concerns raised and arriving at potential solutions.
The Education Lab is part of Hauser & Wirth’s commitment to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences. Located at our galleries in Downtown Los Angeles, Menorca and Somerset, as well as the Chillida Leku museum, each Education Lab is a collaboration with a local community group, school or university. The interactive spaces take their starting point from one of our international artists, facilitating a platform for discovery, discussion and additional resources.
‘We are eager to watch the Education Lab develop and evolve with the collaborative efforts of our global colleagues and local community in Bruton. It will become an interactive hub for new ideas, experiments and working methods, whilst inviting a multitude of voices to engage in such a vital topic. A project like this really is important to show how working together can make positive change for all.’—Debbie Hillyerd, Senior Director, Learning
About ‘GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG’
‘GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG’ is a celebration of Hauser & Wirth’s Swiss heritage through a playful presentation of over 20 artists, including Phyllida Barlow, Martin Creed, Nicole Eisenman, Isa Genzken, Rodney Graham, Richard Hamilton, Mary Heilmann, Camille Henrot, Richard Jackson, Rashid Johnson, Allison Katz, Paul McCarthy, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Dieter Roth, Björn Roth, Mika Rottenberg, Anri Sala, Cindy Sherman, Roman Signer, Lorna Simpson, Alina Szapocznikow, Franz West and David Zink Yi.
The multidisciplinary exhibition is inspired by the notion of a traditional Kunsthalle, conceived as a place to showcase groundbreaking art and explore contemporary issues with a broad audience. The entire site takeover provides a platform for discovery and interaction, extending to all five galleries, outdoor sculpture and a collaborative events programme with the Roth Bar & Grill. The exhibition will evolve in three parts over the course of eight months, featuring immersive installations, solo presentations and iconic video works. Alongside the exhibition, the Education Lab takes its starting point from Mika Rottenberg’s commitment to environmentally sustainable creative practices, developed by the gallery’s green teams globally.
‘GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG’ is on view from until Monday 1 January 2024.
About Mika Rottenberg
Argentina-born, New York-based artist Mika Rottenberg is devoted to a rigorous practice that combines film, architectural installation and sculpture to explore ideas of labor and the production of value in our contemporary hyper-capitalist world. Using traditions of both cinema and sculpture, she seeks out locations around the world where specific systems of production and commerce are in place, such as a pearl factory in China and a Calexico border town. Through the editing process, and with footage from sets built in her studio, Rottenberg connects seemingly disparate places and things to create elaborate and subversive visual narratives. By weaving fact and fiction together, she highlights the inherent beauty and absurdity of our contemporary existence.
About Pipilotti Rist
Pipilotti Rist, a pioneer of spatial video art, was born 1962 in Grabs in the Swiss Rhine Valley on the Austrian Border and has been a central figure within the international art scene since the mid-1980s. For Rist, showing vulnerability is a sign of strength on which she draws for inspiration. With her curious and lavish recordings of nature (to which humans belong as an animal), and her investigative editing, Rist seeks to justify the privileged position we are born with, simply by being human. Her installations and exhibition concepts are expansive, finding within the mind, senses and body the possibility for endless discovery and poetical invention.
