The first volume of the catalogue raisonné for contemporary Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi is now available. Focusing on the first twenty years of the artist’s career, this landmark publication is the culmination of a six-year-long research project, drawing from a wide range of sources and documentation and presented according to international scholarly methodology.
Chronologically illustrating every recorded work between 1984 – 2004, ‘Zeng Fanzhi Catalogue raisonné. Volume I’ is by far the most comprehensive record of the artist’s oeuvre.
A number of previously unknown and unregistered paintings offer new perspectives to understanding the art of Zeng Fanzhi.
Edited by Gladys Chung, the publication features essays by Philipe Dagen, Tsong-Zung Chang, and Fumio Nanjo which further illuminate Zeng Fanzhi’s multifaceted body of work.
The catalogue raisonné is a definitive scholarly research tool for collectors, scholars and art professionals, including detailed annotations, worldwide literature, and exhibition records as well as never-before-published archival materials.
Readers can trace thematic developments over the course of Zeng Fanzhi’s career, such as the early Hospital (1991 – 92) and Meat (1992 – 94) series which garnered international acclaim and later Mask (1994 – 2004) series.

Now living and working in Beijing, Zeng Fanzhi was born in Wuhan, China in 1964 and graduated from the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in Wuhan in 1991. Since the early 1990s, the artist has occupied a distinctive and prominent place internationally, with works exhibited at art institutions worldwide including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA; The Van Gogh Museum, The Netherlands; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, China; Musée du Louvre, France; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; Punta della Dogana, Italy; Rockbund Art Museum and Union Church, China; Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; and Shanghai Art Museum, China.
