Artist, Authorship & Legacy: A Conversation

Hauser & Wirth is delighted to invite you to a panel discussion on occasion of the launch of the recently released anthology ‘Artist, Authorship & Legacy: A Reader’, edited by Daniel McClean and published by Riding House.

To mark its release, Art360 Foundation, Hauser & Wirth and DACS have come together to present a panel of experts who will explore themes of authorship and legacy from their own perspectives.

Chaired by Melanie Gerlis, of the Financial Times and The Art Newspaper, the panel will include:

Jennifer Gross, Executive Director of the Hauser & Wirth Institute, Daniel McClean, editor of ‘Artist, Authorship & Legacy: A Reader’, artist Jacqueline Poncelet and Saskia Spender, President of the Arshile Gorky Foundation

About the speakers

Melanie Gerlis became the weekly art market columnist for the Financial Times in September 2016. She was previously Art Market Editor for The Art Newspaper, reporting on auctions, art fairs and market news globally since 2007. Melanie is a trustee of the Art360 Foundation and The Art Academy, London, as well as a governing body member of Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. She has a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University and an MA in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. Her book, ‘Art as an Investment? A Survey of Comparative Assets’, was published by Lund Humphries in 2014.

Jennifer Gross is the executive director of the Hauser and Wirth Institute. The Hauser and Wirth Institute was established in 2017 support art historical scholarship and preserve legacies of modern and contemporary artists through greater public access to their archives.

Daniel McClean is the editor of 'Artist, Authorship & Legacy: A Reader', Daniel is an art and cultural property lawyer who practices in Los Angeles and in London and works with different sectors of the International art market, including artists, estates, galleries, dealers, collectors, museums and foundations. He speaks and writes regularly on art law issues (including for Art Review) and teaches Art Law at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art (London/Los Angeles).

Jacqueline Poncelet is an artist renowned for her installation pieces, ceramic sculptures and public artworks using pattern and colour. Her works include the permanent public work ‘Wrapper’, commissioned by Art on the Underground for Edgware Road tube station (2012). Poncelet received the Art360 Award in 2016 and has since worked closely with Art360 Foundation to build a legacy strategy and multimedia archive. Poncelet’s work can be seen in the collections of Tate, the V&A, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Saskia Spender has been the president of the Arshile Gorky Foundation since 2016 and is the artist’s granddaughter, as well as an artist in her own right. The Arshile Gorky Foundation was established in June 2005 to further the public’s appreciation and understanding of the life and artistic achievements of Arshile Gorky.

The publication critically examines artistic authorship and authenticity through a selection of essays by leading writers and scholars in the field, including professor of art history and criticism Martha Buskirk, Christine J.Vincent, Project Director of the Aspen Institute, celebrated art critic and curator Guy Brett and founder of the Institute for Artists’ Estates, Loretta Wurtenberger.
