Join us in the garden for the launch of the second edition of skate decks designed by LA-based artist Paul McCarthy in collaboration with The Skateroom, a social entrepreneurial venture that partners with contemporary artists to produce art editions on skateboards. Proceeds from the sale of the McCarthy-designed editions will finance the NGO Skateistan, an international nonprofit organization that empowers youth through skateboarding and education in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. For the second edition, McCarthy designed a set of eight editioned skateboards that features visuals he created in support of The Women’s March. The launch of the editions coincides with the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration. In 2006, McCarthy and The Skateroom launched the first edition of skate decks that featured images from the artist’s PROPO series. The proceeds from the first collaboration fully funded Skateistan’s first Skate School in Johannesburg, which opened in August 2016. The Skate School currently engages 332 total active students, of which 227 come from low-income backgrounds and 44% are girls. The proceeds of the new decks will fund the growth of current programs, supporting Skateistan’s mission to reach and empower more children following its successful first year. This event is free, however, reservations are recommended. Click here to RSVP.
