This fall, Hauser & Wirth celebrates The Big Draw Festival 2024 theme ‘Drawing in Motion’ across our global locations. The gallery will welcome diverse audiences of all ages to celebrate the dynamic and ever-changing nature of drawing, by exploring how the act of drawing can capture the essence of movement, energy and life.
Moving beyond the notion of drawing as a static art form, ‘Drawing in Motion’ emphasises the fluidity and vibrancy of the creative process, showcasing how lines, shapes and forms can convey movement and bring art to life. The creative workshops across our locations in Chillida Leku, Downtown Los Angeles, London and Somerset, illustrate how the act of drawing can bring our exhibitions to life in a variety of ways.
The Big Draw is the world’s largest drawing festival with thousands of drawing activities connecting people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators and each other. Hauser & Wirth has been a Sponsor Partner for The Big Draw Festival since 2014, and was the recipient of the Galleries and Museums Award in 2018 and 2023.
Chillida Leku
Monday 4 November – Friday 29 November
Throughout November, school groups will explore how the act of drawing can capture the essence of movement in Eduardo Chillida’s outdoor sculptures. On Sunday 10 November, the museum will host a corresponding community event for participants of all ages and abilities.
Downtown Los Angeles
Saturday 23 November
The gallery will host a community event where participants of all ages can draw with remote-controlled and matchbox cars, in response to the exhibition ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE: The Garage.’ By using the cars as drawing tools, participants will transform the surface of a racetrack sculptural installation into their own canvas, creating a collaborative and kinetic painting as their vehicles glide across the track, turning movement into art.
Somerset
Sunday 30 November
Taking place in our Education Lab, ‘Open Art School,’ participants will respond to the exhibition ‘Phyllida Barlow. unscripted’ by using their entire bodies to make live drawings incorporating buildable, playful objects.
London
Saturday 14 December
The gallery will welcome members of Weekend Arts, a cultural outreach initiative for marginalized adults in London, UK. Founded in 2017, the project works with individuals who share experience of homelessness or mental health interventions and facilitates access to art and design. Inspired by the exhibitions ‘Jack Whitten. Speedchaser’ and ‘George Rouy. The Bleed, Part I,’ participants will take inspiration from the works to consider movement, vibration and action in their drawings and sketches.
