The Local and Global in the Art of Frank Bowling

Join us for a creative and interactive afternoon exploring the work of artist Frank Bowling as part of the gallery’s presentation ‘FRANK AT 90.’

Delve into a stellar artistic career spanning over 50 years with guest speakers Susi Sahmland, Frank Bowling Studio; artist Rohan Ayinde; and Beatriz Lobo Britto, Curator at the Institute of International Visual Arts in London (iniva).

About ‘FRANK AT 90’
Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA celebrates his 90th birthday with a presentation at Hauser & Wirth London of two monumental works, ‘Hello Rosa New York’ (1973) and ‘Thanks to Water’ (2023-24) in response. The presentation is on view at Hauser & Wirth London through Saturday 16 March.

About Susi Sahmland
Susi Sahmland looks after educational outreach for the Frank Bowling studio. She works closely with schools, galleries and museums and has written (with a colleague from Goldsmiths) a unit of work on Frank’s paintings. Susi taught KS1 to KS5 in central London schools for 22 years before doing an MA in Leadership in Education at the Institute of Education in 2013 and is now Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. Susi regularly speaks at conferences, workshops and network meetings in the UK and Germany.

About Rohan Ayinde
Rohan Ayinde is an interdisciplinary artist and poet based between London and Chicago. His work traverses audio, visual and literary forms and often embraces installation and performance. He received his MA in Visual and Critical Studies from SAIC (2019) and on graduating was a curatorial fellow with ACRE (2019-2023). In 2021 he was awarded the fifth Stuart Hall Library Artist’s Residency. He is the gallery director at Blanc (Chicago) and has curated multiple shows there. He is currently co-directing a 5-screen-installation with Tayo Rapoport for an exhibition on 500 years of Black British Music, at the British Library (2024).

About Beatriz Lobo Britto
Beatriz Lobo Britto is the Curator at the Institute of International Visual Arts (iniva). Beatriz is also a museologist, researcher and an enthusiast of non-hierarchical thinking, believing in the equality of ideas and non-linear ways of composing and organising them. Beatriz holds a BA (Hons) in Museum Studies from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and MA in Curatorial Practice with a focus in Contemporary Art from Glasgow School of Art. She has also worked at The NewBridge Project (Newcastle, UK), Gallery of Modern Art (Glasgow, UK), Museu do Índio (Museum of Indigenous Peoples, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
