What’s On in Somerset?

Oudolf Field

Piet Oudolf, the internationally renowned landscape designer from the Netherlands, has designed the landscaping scheme for the entire site, including Oudolf Field—a large perennial meadow situated behind the gallery.

Carefully shaped and planted, the garden echoes the tradition of classical gardens, but the variety of species and combination of plants creates a looseness, softening the formality of its appearance. Known for his use of perennials, Oudolf Field has visual interest year round.

At the top of Oudolf Field sits the Radić Pavilion. Designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić, it was installed at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in 2015, following its unveiling the previous year as the Serpentine Gallery 2014 Pavilion.

Entrance is free, although we encourage visitors to donate to our 2024 – 2025 charity partner, Good Company Bruton.

Roth Bar, Da Costa and FARM SHOP

Roth Bar is site-specific artwork and fully-functioning bar at Hauser & Wirth Somerset.

Created by artist Oddur Roth, grandson of the late German-born Swiss artist Dieter Roth, the bar is a dynamic and changing installation, composed of salvaged materials and objects from reclamation yards in the surrounding area, inspired by the history of Durslade Farm.

Roth Bar is a vibrant, informal celebration of Somerset and the West Country. Enjoy signature and classic cocktails, wine from our vineyard and cider from our orchards, alongside reimagined Roth Bar favourites, snacks and sharing boards, pastries and sweets.

Roth Bar is open Wednesday – Sunday from 9 am.

Da Costa is inspired by Iwan Wirth’s maternal grandfather, who originated from the small mountainous village of Rivamonte Agordino in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. He emigrated to Switzerland in the early 20th Century, where he opened a small restaurant, much loved for its simple, honest fare.

A century later, and 800 miles from that first restaurant, Da Costa continues this culinary adventure, using freshly grown, seasonal ingredients from Durslade Farm and the surrounding area to create dishes blending the best of both worlds: quintessential Englishness with Italian flair.

Da Costa is open Wednesday – Sunday from 12 pm.

FARM SHOP celebrates the best growers, farmers and makers that Somerset has to offer, as well as the produce from Durslade Farm.

It is passionate about promoting and sharing local talent, supporting small projects and working with established producers to create products that you can only find in FARM SHOP.

FARM SHOP Somerset is located on the edge of a working farm where, alongside livestock, there is a vineyard, orchard, walled garden and orchard. With an in-house forager, butcher and deli counter, FARM SHOP showcases truly seasonal produce.

FARM SHOP is open Monday – Sunday from 9 am.

Learning at Somerset

Hauser & Wirth is committed to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences with a focus on first-hand experience. Ongoing global projects are centred on three core pillars: to engage with communities; enrich academic program; and foster better access to art careers through a series of meaningful partnerships.

Our learning program in Somerset fosters dialogue, creativity and discovery among the widest possible range of audiences, through activities and events catalyzed by the work of the gallery’s artists.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s strong relationships with local schools, universities and institutions have led to partnership projects such as: Architectural Summer School with Drawing Matter and Kingston University, MA residency with Dartington Arts School and Education Labs with Arts University Bournemouth and Bath Spa University. Through our community events program, we work closely with regional and national organizations including Bristol Old Vic Theatre and The Big Draw.

Residencies in Somerset

Since 2013, Hauser & Wirth Somerset has supported an immersive artist-in-residence program, facilitating over 50 residencies for Hauser & Wirth artists and opportunities beyond the gallery’s roster.

The residencies have no prescribed outcome but instead provide artists, curators and students with time and space for reflection, research and production. All participants are encouraged to contribute to a continuous creative hub, including collaborative community events and learning workshops.

Previous artists-in-residence include: Rita Ackermann, Martin Creed, Allison Katz, Bharti Kher, Pipilotti Rist, Henry Taylor, Thomas J Price, Rashid Johnson, Christina Quarles and Firelei Báez.

Arthaus

Arthaus, Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s youth group, is an inclusive community of young people aged 15 – 19 years who share a passion for art. It is an opportunity to meet regularly at the gallery to connect with like-minded individuals, socialise, collaborate and embrace new experiences. It is a space for alternative voices, self-expression, inspiration and creative freedom.
