Join us for a hands-on Family Studio exploring themes of our summer exhibition ‘Takesada Matsutani’. About the Studio: Working with pencils, watercolors and butcher paper, families will come together to create abstract layers of graphite based on the monumental textured works of Takesada Matsutani’s Stream series (1977 – present). Throughout the duration of the workshop, families will create a record of their accumulated energy through repeated graphite strokes. On top of this textural ground, families will be able to employ sponge brushes and watercolor to add their own vibrant designs. This workshop is designed to demonstrate the endless possibilities of a limited palette, seeking to answer the artist’s own question: ‘If you only have one paper, one pencil, what can you do with it?’ About the Exhibition: ‘Takesada Matsutani’ is the first Los Angeles solo exhibition for the Osaka-born, Paris-based artist Takesada Matsutani. Coinciding with the debut of his commissioned works at the 2017 Venice Biennale, ‘Takesada Matsutani’ is an illuminating survey that spans the artist’s career, which began with his participation in the Gutai Art Association and evolved to express the complexities of a life lived between Japan and France. The exhibition features 34 works from three distinct periods: 1960s Gutai-era pieces never before shown outside of Japan, one of the artist’s largest installations from 1983, and a new pre-figuration of his 2017 Venice Biennale project. This event is free, however, advanced booking is essential as there are limited places. Click here to register. Photo: Noé Montes
