Ellen Gallagher in Conversation with Christine Y. Kim

On the occasion of the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, join us for a discussion between Ellen Gallagher and Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Comprising a suite of new works that includes paintings and drawings, ‘Ellen Gallagher: Accidental Records’ finds the artist returning to and building upon themes and motifs at the center of her practice. These works extend her exploration of the complex histories of the Black Atlantic and the afterlives of the Middle Passage. Widely acclaimed for her own genre of history painting, Gallagher questions accepted geographies. The layered surfaces of her works become a kind of reckoning, evoking, in the artist’s words, ‘the way sailors mark their location at sea, determined by return.’ This event is free, however, reservations are recommended. Click here to register. About the Artist Ellen Gallagher (b. 1965, Providence, Rhode Island) lives and works in New York and Rotterdam. Gallagher has a solo exhibition opening at The Power Plant, Toronto (2018). She will also be showing a newly commissioned film installation at Prospect.4 New Orleans, Contemporary Arts Centre, New Orleans, which opens 18 November 2017. Kim is Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her recent exhibitions include ‘Diana Thater: The Sympathetic Imagination’ (2015 – 2016); ‘My Barbarian: Double Agency’ (2015); ‘James Turrell: A Retrospective’ (2013 – 2014), which won first place for the Best Monographic Museum Exhibition in the U.S. by the International Art Critics Association (AICA-USA) in 2014; and ‘Teresa Margolles,’ an outdoor sculpture project in collaboration with the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) a non-profit organization for public art which she co-founded in 2009. Prior to her post at LACMA, Kim was Associate Curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem (2000-08) where she organized exhibitions such as ‘Kehinde Wiley, The World Stage: Africa Lagos-Dakar’ (2008), ‘Flow’ (2008), ‘Philosophy of Time Travel’ (2007), ‘Henry Taylor: Sis and Bra’ (2007), ‘Black Belt’ (2003), and ‘Africaine’ (2002); and surveys ‘Frequency’ (2005) and ‘Freestyle’ (2001) with Thelma Golden. Kim’s upcoming exhibitions at LACMA include ‘Isaac Julien: Playtime’ (2019) and ‘Julie Mehretu: A Survey’ (2019).
