Frank Bowling’s exhibition ‘Collage’ will be complemented by an academic program, the first of its kind for our Parisian gallery, driven by the shared passion for education and learning by Frank Bowling and Hauser & Wirth. This includes a Study Day on Monday 28 April 2025 at the gallery, as well as workshops for school pupils from wider Paris regions.
The Study Day is co-convened by the academics Altair Brandon-Salmon and Ed Kettleborough and will be oriented around three themed roundtables responding to Bowling’s work: Paint and Process, Atlantic Artmaking, and Bowling’s Modernism. Invited speakers include Ben Bowling, Leon Wainwright, Indie Choudhury, Ana Teles, Kate Keohane and Artie Foster, whilst participants are encouraged to contribute and speak openly in direct response to the paintings on show.
This will be the first scholarly gathering on Frank Bowling since the artist’s Tate Britain retrospective in London in 2019, presenting an important opportunity to widen art historical perspectives on his practice.

With the goal of improving access to art, workshops for local school pupils will be hosted in the exhibition, encouraging engagement with and creative responses to Bowling’s work. Workshops are aimed at year 8 and 9 students and will be led by Susi Sahmland, Head of Educational Outreach for the Frank Bowling Studio, alongside the Hauser & Wirth Learning team.
Hauser & Wirth is committed to inclusive learning programs that create a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences. Ongoing global projects are centered on three core pillars: to engage with communities; enrich academic courses; and foster better access to art careers through a series of meaningful partnerships. In 2024, the gallery partnered with 22 non-profits and collaborated with a further 64 charities and organizations, resulting in over 170,000 people globally experiencing an element of the learning program. We ran over 1,000 tours and events in 10 locations, welcoming 10,521 learners from schools and universities.

About the exhibition
Frank Bowling’s exhibition ‘Collage,’ the artist’s first solo exhibition in France, explores collage as a conceptual tool and technique for Bowling’s practice and thinking. The exhibition features works from the early 2000s up until the present day, where at the age of 90 Bowling still paints on a daily basis. The starting point for the show is reflected in four new large-scale paintings on display in the ground floor gallery, which are comprised of multiple canvas panels. These monumental works—including the 4.4 meter-tall ‘Skid’ (2023)—are a renewal of Bowling’s use of collaged canvas and marouflage, which has long formed an important part of his practice. The exhibition is complemented by an academic program.
‘Frank Bowling. Collage’ will be on view at Hauser & Wirth Paris through 25 May.
