‘Learning Exchange: Art Education Matters’ Comes to Somerset

On Thursday 19 September 2024, the Learning Exchange traveled to Somerset for a day of conversations highlighting interdisciplinary approaches to learning, led by artists, educators, museum and gallery professionals. The event followed the gallery’s inaugural Learning Exchange in 2023 at Hauser & Wirth New York, 18th Street, with further editions planned in New York and Los Angeles. The forthcoming ‘Learning Exchange: Community Matters’ will take place in our gallery in New York, 18th Street, on Friday 18 October 2024.

Artfarm’s Manuela Restaurant Debuts Artist Interventions in New York’s SoHo

Manuela is a welcoming neighborhood restaurant and bar where great contemporary art and food combine to create a convivial atmosphere and sense of abundance. The restaurant is named for Manuela Wirth, who co-founded Artfarm with her husband Iwan Wirth. And like its sister restaurant in the Downtown Arts District of LA, Manuela in SoHo takes its cues from its namesake’s legendary hospitality, culinary talents and famous warmth as a hostess whose passion for freshly prepared cuisine, local culture and community are complemented by the guiding conviction that art and life are indivisible. Hewing to the belief that great food and delicious, nourishing meals are not luxuries but essentials to be generously shared.

Mark Bradford Awarded National Medal of the Arts

In receiving the award—the highest given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government—Bradford shared: ‘It is an unbelievable honor to be included among the recipients of the National Medal of Arts. Barbara Chase-Riboud Exhibition Across Eight Major Museums in Paris

Barbara Chase-Riboud. Everytime A Knot is Undone, A God is Released’ is the first multi-museum exhibition of a single artist to be presented in Paris during their lifetime. On view across eight major Parisian institutions—Musée d’Orsay, Palais de la Porte Dorée, Musée du Louvre, Philharmonie de Paris, Centre Pompidou, Musée du Quai Branly, Musée Guimet and Palais de Tokyo—this presentation is a wide-ranging celebration of the work of the artist, spanning sculpture, drawing and poems created from 1958 to the present day.

Jeffrey Gibson Joins Hauser & Wirth in Collaboration With Sikkema Jenkins & Co.

We are honored to announce the global representation of acclaimed American artist Jeffrey Gibson, in collaboration with Sikkema Jenkins & Co. Over the past three decades, Gibson has evolved a rich interdisciplinary practice, drawing from American, Indigenous and queer histories, as well as references to popular music, literature and art historical narratives. Harnessing these sources to his own personal experiences, Gibson has created an astonishing array of works that explore questions of taste, authenticity and the limits of cultural legibility. His art spans the fullest range of mediums—from painting and sculpture to installation, video and performance—and a distinctive visual language that embraces a broad spectrum of cultural expressions and identities in a way that is simultaneously intimate and radically expansive.

Susana Chillida’s ‘Una Vida Para El Arte’ Joins Menorca’s Learning Institutions

Following the presentation of Susana Chillida’s book ‘Una vida para el arte’ in Menorca, we have partnered with Escola Oficial d’Idiomes (Mahon and Ciutadella’s language schools), Escoles d’adults de Menorca (Menorcan adults education school) and Xarxa de Biblioteques de Menorca (local libraries across Menorca). The collaboration will involve the donation of Susana Chillida’s memoir in both Spanish—published by Galaxia Gutenberg—and English, released by Hauser & Wirth Publishers, to be included in their winter programs.

Art and Design Students Respond to Takesada Matsutani in Paris

David Lewis Joins the Gallery as Senior Director

We are pleased to announce that David Lewis has joined the gallery as a Senior Director in New York City. Lewis comes to Hauser & Wirth after having run his own eponymous gallery for over a decade, with a first location on Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side and a subsequent space on Walker Street in Tribeca. David Lewis Gallery attracted critical praise for its rigorous program focused equally on solo presentations showcasing emerging artists and incisive theory-driven group exhibitions, and for revising the canon via thoughtful attention to under-recognized older artists and historical figures. Prominent among those Lewis has championed are pioneering feminist artist Mary Beth Edelson (1933 – 2021) and celebrated Alabama-based expressionist painter and sculptor Thornton Dial (1928 – 2016).

Students Reimagine Community Spaces in Professional Development Workshop

We are proud to have welcomed Leela Keshav as our inaugural writer-in-residence at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Keshav was the first participant in ‘Write Now,’ a new residency in partnership with ArtReview, that provided time and space for early career writers to develop their craft and ambitions. ‘Write Now’ took place in parallel to the gallerys ongoing program of artist residencies, that have been running since 2013.

William Kentridge at Art in the Park, Zurich

The 2024 edition of the Baur au Lac’s Art in the Park program will feature five bronze sculptures by artist William Kentridge, on view 10 June until 21 July 2024. Curated by Gigi Kracht, curator, collector, writer and founder of Art in the Park, Kentridge’s playful investigations in sculpture and scale will be featured alongside an indoor presentation by Martin Creed and Rita Ackermann.

Cal State LA Student Filmmakers Spotlight Nonprofits Dedicated to Community Empowerment

For the Spring 2024 semester of Community Impact Media, a shared project between the gallery and Cal State LA, student filmmakers drew inspiration from the exhibition RETROaction (part two). Their films illuminate the stories of nonprofits committed to the socioeconomic transformation in South LA communities and organizations advocating for those impacted by the juvenile justice system.

An Education Lab Coinciding with Jason Rhoades’ Exhibition ‘DRIVE’

In celebration of Jason Rhoades’ exhibition in Los Angeles the Education Lab will host ‘Going Forward with No Brakes,’ an interactive space and series of programs throughout the duration of the exhibition for visitors to consider the significance of car culture in Los Angeles. For Rhoades, cars played an important role in the California artist’s work: as readymade sculptural objects, and as imaginative spaces in which to break, conceptualize, create and converse with others. In the Education Lab, visitors will have access to a curated film and books about cars and transportation and space to respond to the materials and document their own relationships to vehicles.

Education Lab Returns to Menorca: An Invitation to Look

This year’s Education Lab in Menorca, ‘An Invitation to Look,’ takes its starting point from the many summers Eduardo Chillida spent in Menorca and how he responded to the landscape and, in particular, the sea. Inspired by Chillida’s sculpture ‘Homenaje a la mar IV (Homage to the Sea IV)’ (1998), the Education Lab is an invitation to look closer at our natural surroundings. In the interactive space, resources will be provided to engage in activities that invite visitors to observe the landscape and artworks on Illa del Rei through new perspectives.
