Opening Reception: ‘Natural Practice’ and ‘Vital Clay’

  • 10am – 4pm

Join us to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions at Make Hauser & Wirth Somerset: ‘Natural Practice’ and ‘Vital Clay’ featuring Katie Spragg, Akiko Hirai and Dan Kelly.

Tickets are free and include a welcome drink, but advance booking is recommended.

About ‘Natural Practice’
Over the course of 2023, Katie Spragg has immersed herself in a multi-site residency, travelling from Braemar, Scotland to Hauser & Wirth Menorca and concluding at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Throughout this year-long project, the focus of Spragg’s ceramic practice has been as much about gathering, observation and investigation as producing the finished sculptures for the exhibition. Reflecting on her creative process, she considers how her artworks are themselves works in progress, markers in time along the way to the next idea or outcome.

About ‘Vital Clay’
This exhibition celebrates the work of acclaimed ceramicists, Akiko Hirai and Dan Kelly, whose practice reveals a physicality of form and fluidity of surface texture, with the intervention of the maker’s hand tempered by the wilfulness of the clay and the alchemy of the kiln. For both artists, vessels act as containers for historical reference and conceptual enquiry. Through the language of clay, they embrace the elements of shape and form with a vigour and originality of vision.

Both exhibitions are view at Make Hauser & Wirth Somerset from Saturday 2 December 2023 through Sunday 28 January 2024.

Please be advised that photographs will be taken at this event for use on the Hauser & Wirth website, social media and in other marketing materials.
