Family Studio Workshop: Layers and Systems

  • Sun 27 October 2019
  • 12 – 3pm

Taking inspiration from Charles Gaines’s investigation of grids and systems, participants will build layered artworks displaying trees and other plant species using multicolored cellophane and markers. The transparency of the materials and specific process utilized in the workshop will mirror Gaines’s works on view in the exhibition, ‘Charles Gaines. Palm Trees and Other Works.’ This workshop will be led by local artist Chloe Pang. This drop-in activity is free, however, reservations are recommended. Palm Trees and Other Works’ On view in the South gallery, ‘Palm Trees and Other Works,’ is Hauser & Wirth’s first exhibition with Charles Gaines, noted American artist, educator, and recipient of the 2019 Edward MacDowell Medal. This exhibition debuts new works from his signature Gridworks series. Employing native trees from Palm Canyon near Palm Springs, these luminous works have evolved from Gaines’s rigorous application of his numbered systems – a process central to an esteemed, decades-long practice that interrogates the relationship between the object and its subjective realms.
