ART CLUB: Mariella Frostrup in Conversation with Phyllida Barlow

An evening with Hauser & Wirth artist Phyllida Barlow in conversation with journalist and broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, exploring the themes of her work and discussing her inaugural exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Followed by dinner in the Roth Bar & Grill.

British artist Phyllida Barlow is inaugurating Hauser & Wirth Somerset with a presentation of new works created specially for the gallery. Barlow was born in 1944 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She lives and works in London. In the late 1960s, she began teaching at the Slade School of Fine Art as Professor of Fine Art. In 2009, she retired from teaching in order to focus on her own work. In 2011 Barlow was elected a Royal Academician. Barlow’s work focuses on the physical experience of handling materials, which she transforms through layering, accumulation and juxtaposition. Her direct and practical processes of making utilise readily available materials such as cardboard, cement and plaster, polystyrene, timber and paint. Barlow’s sculptural practice is grounded in an anti- monumental tradition and is concerned with the relationship between objects and the space that surrounds them.

Mariella Frostrup is a writer, broadcaster and respected arts critic who lives locally to Hauser & Wirth Somerset. She has had a long career in television and radio which began with The Little Picture Show (ITV) and Big World Café (Channel Four) and has run the gamut from Panorama and Question Time to cameos in Absolutely Fabulous and Coupling, and fronting The Young Ones and the Culture Show on BBC1 and SKY Arts long running The Book Show. Mariella has sat on the judging panels of almost all the UK’s top cultural awards including the Booker Prize, the Turner Prize, the RIBA Stirling Prize and the Evening Standard Film Awards and is a member of BAFTA, sits on the RA Council and created her own foundation, the GREAT Initiative to advocate on Gender Equality issues. Frostrup writes weekly for The Observer and presents Open Book and Bringing Up Britain for BBC Radio 4.
