Hauser & Wirth Somerset is delighted to host a rare live music performance by the artist Rodney Graham with David Carswell on Friday 26th May 2017, celebrating Graham’s latest album ‘Gondoliers’. Ahead of his gig in Somerset, Graham will also perform at BALTIC in Gateshead (Wednesday 24 May) to coincide with his exhibition ‘That’s Not Me’, and in London at 180 Strand (Thursday 25 May). The tour is in partnership with The Vinyl Factory and BALTIC. Taking in influences from Steve Gunn to King Tuff and Joan Jett, and sounds from shoegaze, to bubblegum metal, country music and the sea shanty, each of Graham’s albums are filled with quotations and homages to other musicians. The music also evolves independently from his visual art: “I don’t deal with art issues in my music and try not to approach music as an artist. I try to approach it as a musician, as humble as my abilities might be in that regard.” Starting out as a guitarist in the alternative Canadian punk scene of the 1970s, Graham has been producing music for over 30 years and has released several albums with his band. Musicians and producers who feature on this new release include: John Collins (Destroyer, the New Pornographers), David Carswell (Destroyer), Pete Bourne (Copyright), Paul Rigby (Neko Case), Joseph Shabason and Olympia music scene legend, Lois. Since the 1980s, Vancouver-based artist Rodney Graham has grown his diverse practice to encompass photography, painting, sculpture, film, video and music. Find out more about Rodney Graham here. Please note the performance coincides with the preview of Rashid Johnson. ‘Stranger’ Image: Rodney Graham with David Carswell. Photo by James O’Mara
