Hauser & Wirth has launched a brand new residency for students from The California Institute for the Arts (CalArts) to exchange with Bath School of Art and Design, Bath Spa University. The two educational institutions are local to Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles and Hauser & Wirth Somerset respectively.
The initiative has been designed to support emerging artists affiliated with these universities by offering them locations to live and work for an intensive short-term period in Los Angeles, USA and Somerset, UK. The program encourages independent work while providing support through contact with academics, curators and artists.
Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles is delighted to announce that Fiona Haines has been chosen to participate in the residency at CalArts and will be coming to Los Angeles in May 2017.
Fiona Haines works as an artist in Bath. Born in Ireland and educated in England. She completed a Masters in Fine Art specializing in Sculpture and Photography. In 2013 she was commissioned to make a sculpture for Chelsea Flower Show, a Gold medal was awarded. In 2014 Haines was awarded the Gane Travel Award to Iceland and the Porthleven prize. Her work is held in the Fidelity International Collection and Oxford Castle Collection.
Haines is concerned with the exploration and ontology of sensory landscapes in the quest to capture fugitive essence. She is concerned with making things visible that are not normally visible to the human eye such as minerals found in Cornish water. Haines transforms objects and juxtaposes them outside of their context to become a delivery system of the concept of fugitive essence.
